grassland 草原の方へ, 2003
草原が眼前に広がると、わたしの心が騒ぐ。
数年前、北海道で初めて見渡す限りの草原を見た。北海道の草原は、わたしに「見渡す」という身ぶりを教えてくれた。その広漠とした空間とテクスチャーが持たらすある種の感覚。「見渡す」という身ぶりが持たらす多幸感。この感じは、これまでもどこかで経験したことがなかったか？万博公園の雑木林を抜け、芝の広がる空間に出た時、背の高い多年草が林立する三田の使われていない工業用地に出くわした時、わたしは確かにその感覚を味わったことがあったはずだ。北海道で、わたしはともすれば見失ってしまうその感覚を持続させる術を発見したのだった。
草原のテクスチャーは、その土地の植生そのものである。その土地の特性を読み取る術を学ぶためには、土地の植生と向き合わなければならない。その土地を歩き、テクスチャーをよく見ること。そうすれば、その土地の気候や土壌、人とその土地との距離あるいは故郷とその土地との距離を読み取ることができる。
今やわたしはこれらの広漠たる草原を前に、サバンナの狩人や城砦の夜警さながらに遠くを見渡し、植物学者のように草原のテクスチャーを観察する。
これらは、遠くからやってくる、あるいは足下に存在する徴を見付けるための行為である。わたしは知覚を研ぎ澄まし、草原が隠している徴を探す。
Whenever I come across an expanse of grassland, I feel excited.
Several years ago in Hokkaido, I saw grassland which stretched as far as the eye could see for the first time. The grassland in Hokkaido taught me the action and the literal meaning of "looking out over" something.
The vast space and texture create a certain kind of sensation. An euphoric feeling is brought on by "looking out over" the grassland. Where was it that I experienced this feeling in the past? I definitely experienced something like this when I came to a large piece of lawn after passing through a grove of trees in Expo 70 Commemoration Park or when I came across a disused industrial lot with a forest of tall perennial plants around it in Sanda. In Hokkaido, I discovered how to maintain this feeling that I tend to lose sight of in daily life.
The texture of grassland is the vegetation of the land itself. To study how to read the characteristics of the land, you have to stand face-to-face with the vegetation. Walk around the land and look closely at its texture. This will make it possible for you to read not only the climate and soil of the land, but also the distance that lies between the people and the land or the distance between a town and the land.
Now I observe the texture of the grassland like a botanist and look out over the expanse as if I was a hunter on the savanna or a nightwatchman at a fortress with the vast space opening before me.
These photographs are attempts to find symbols which come from afar or exist underfoot. I try to sharpen my senses and search for a sign that is hidden in the grassland.
